Class Descriptions
Orientation to Woodworking: This is an introductory woodworking class designed for all individuals with a desire to learn about woodworking. This class will cover wood (characteristics, movement and preparation), basic woodworking techniques, shop safety and the safe operation of the power tools in our woodshop. This is a hands on class, each student upon completion, will have a better understanding of and feel more comfortable working with wood.

Parent & Child Woodworking Project: This woodworking class enables both child and adult the opportunity to create and work on a project together. The class also provides the child with an brief overview of woodworking. Along with parental supervision the child will learn to use basic hand tools. This is a fun class all will enjoy. The class is open to both boys and girls 8 years and older. Each child must be accompanied and supervised by an adult over the age of 21. The cost for this class is based on parent and child together as a pair.

Hand Tool Sharpening: Hand tools are used in woodworking to augment your power tools. Power tools like a Table Saw require a sharp blade in order to perform properly, so must your hand tools. The use of dull hand tools causes more work than is necessary. In fact some people even avoid using them for that reason alone. In this class you will learn how to create a shaving edge on your chisels and hand planes. You may not have a chance in class to sharpen all of your tools, but you will take home with you the ability. Sharpening is a skill that requires patience and time, but the pay-off is well worth your attention. Each student is required to bring to class:

Router Fundamentals : In this class we will focus on the most versatile tool in your shop the Router. You will learn how to set up and use your router in this class. You will get hands on experience: Edge Profiling and Using Templates. You'll perform operations typical of woodworking. This is a beginner’s class, but advanced woodworkers with a desire to hone their router skills are invited. So come and have fun, experiencing the versatility and projects you can make with your router. Each student is required to bring to class:

Wood Joinery 101: Wood Joinery is the hallmark of quality craftsmanship. A good wood joint can last forever, which in turn your projects will last forever, and become heirlooms to hand down through the generations. In this class you will learn several of the most common types of woodworking joints using the Table Saw and Router such as: Butt Joints, Rabbit Joints, Dado Joints, Lap Joints, Biscuit Joints, Mortise and Tenon Joints, Pocket Screw Joints, Dovetail Joints utilizing Jigs, and Box Joints which are considered one of the strongest joints in woodworking. In this class you will construct an easy to use woodworking jigs that can be used with a Table Saw or a Router. Student is required to bring to class:

Wood Joinery 102: Hand cut dovetail joints.....practice, practice, practice.....This class will give you the opportunity to learn how to cut half-blind and through dovetail joints with hand tools.....NO POWER TOOLS. This joint is probably the toughest joint to master and if done correctly can match up with any power tool or jig used in woodworking, but like I said it takes practice.. Each student is required to bring to class:

Wood Joinery 103 - Drawer Construction: In this class we will focus on Drawer Construction. We will discuss the types of drawer joints, drawer guides and types of materials used. Each student will construct a drawer utilizing various drawer joints. Student is required to bring to class:

Box Making: In this class we will focus on box construction. Upon completion of this class each student will have designed and constructed a small lidded box. Each box will include accents that achieve additional strength and beauty while utilizing mitered spline joinery. Finishing techniques will also be included in this class. Jewelry Box with Lid
Cabinet Construction: This class is designed to teach you framed cabinet construction. You will learn how to design and use a story stick. Each student will build a cabinet carcass and construct a face frame utilizing pocket screw joinery. In addition you will also construct the drawer and door of your project. Your cabinet hardware will include European Drawer Guides and Hinges. At the completion of this class each student will take their cabinets’ home with them. Each student is required to bring to class:

Woodburning 101: This is a basic woodburning class to give you the opportunity to learn from skilled woodburner Raymond Diaz from the Bakersfield area, known for his beautiful hand carved Gordes. You will learn to transfer pictures onto your project and create art utilizing woodburning skills you learn in class. Each student will be provided with the materials, but must bring a woodburning tool to class with them. If needed call Jeff @ 661-342-1229 for more details.

Jigs & Fixtures: Jigs & fixtures perform operations that are difficult or impossible to do freehand. They are able to expand the capabilities of tools and machinery. The ability to machine parts with precision and repeatable accuracy. Whether doing basic or complexed duties, jigs & fixtures are an essential part of many tool and machine operations. They allow woodworkers to perform woodworking tasks easier, more accurate, and especially safer.

Furniture Making 101: This class is designed to provide the individual with the basics of furniture design, tools and equipment, tabletop construction, and table joinery.

Furniture Making 102: During this class each student will design and construct a Hall or Coffee Table. They will utilize the skills learned in Furniture Making 101 (Prerequisite). Each student will provide their own materials and supplies. If needed, materials can be ordered thru our school.
